Czech Legion in Italy WWI Soldier Artwork Patriotic Card
Patriotic donation postcard for the Czech Legion in Italy during and shortly after WWI featuring artwork by the soldiers doing the actual fighting. A bit worn, as per scans. Many ex-pat Czechs as well as those captured as POW's were recruited to fight against the Central Powers in WWI at great risk to themselves -- besides being killed in battle, if they were captured they were generally executed, since, as subjects of the Austrian crown they were regarded as traitors.

Czech Legion in Russia WWI Borispol Soldier Artist Signed Patriotic Card
Patriotic donation postcard for the Czech Legion in Russia during and shortly after WWI featuring artwork by the soldiers doing the actual fighting. Excellent unused condition, as per scans. The Legion had great success fighting for the Russians at Zborov, but after the Tsar was deposed and the Communists took over they were to be disarmed, a fate to which they took exception. So, like any of us would do, they decided to take over the Trans-Siberian railway and carved their own rolling iron empire out of the former Russia crown's east. The Allies weakly supported them (mostly with words) in fighting the Communists, but ultimately their revolution sputtered to a halt and they evacuated out of (mostly) Valdivostok.

Czech Legion WWI-era Original Postcard Italy USED
Original art postcard by member of the Czech Legion in Italy, printed and sold to support/honor the legion. Czechoslovakia was part of Austria at the start of WWI and were obligated to fight on the side of the Entente forces (Germany-Austria-Turkey-Bulgaria) against the allies. However, there was a large national liberation movement, so many Czechs went abroad to fight against the Germans-Austrians with the hope that if they lost, Czechoslovakia would become an independent nation, which is what happened. The Czechs fought for Russia, for the Italians and for the French, among others. Slightly worn, as per scans; genuinely used in the fledgling Czech Republic.
